The tag says it has a CEL and iffy steering (lots of play I’ve been told) . No rust perforations from what I can see, just a little surface rust. There’s some wear on the left side of the driver’s seat and the headliner is sagging.
It’s nothing fancy (4.0, auto, 2WD), but might be the start of a good project; it’s probably too clean for David Tracy. I’m tempted to buy it, but I don’t know why. It should be on the website publicsurplus.com within the next week or two; look under Missouri when searching - it’s in St Louis.

Well, yeah, you have a point there. But there’s a difference between normal slop and extra slop.
I drove lots of equipment at a major international airport, and let me tell you, it’s a good thing that those vehicles are limited to 20-25 MPH. Just keeping them in something that resembles a straight line whilst at speed was a major challenge. And then there were the vehicles with pure hydraulic steering - no mechanical linkage. I had one of those die on me at speed, losing steering and power brakes. If I hadn’t remembered the auxiliary electric hydraulic pump I might have been decapitated by the engine on a parked A340.

worst one i had was self powered pallet jack in a slaughterhouse...it handled just fine... what it didnt do was stop once you let of the handle
got meself squished between it and the 2 crates of pork fat i was hauling and another guy hauling the same load the other way
that was a lot of pork fat to get squished by.... turns out im remarkably squishy.... walked away unhurt but winded once they lifted the palletjack over me toecaps so i could move

That could definitely be a fun project.

The 2wds with the 4.0 are actually a lot of fun. the front ends are super simple and there is a lot more room to work on the underside. Would be better with a stick but you can’t have everything.

Oh, that one’ s nice. I’ve got the 6MT in the Mazda5, so I guess I could live with something with an auto. Now how easy would it be to convert to 4WD, or would it be better left as 2WD?

If you wanted 4wd it would just be easier/cheaper to buy a 4wd. 2wds are fun because they are quite a bit lighter and handle better. In some markets they are desirable to be converted to JeepSpeed racers

No need for 4WD for me as I haven’t done any off roading. I was just curious to see if these were simple and modular enough to make that a project someone could do relatively easily in the discomfort of their own garage. Me? I like light weight and cornering, and the concept of JeepSpeed, something that I’ve never heard of until tonight, is actually more appealing to me.

I don’t know whether it was normal or ours was just total garbage, but I used to volunteer at an aviation museum and they would always force the Canadian Airlines guy to drive the Tug tow tractor they had donated since it was such a deathtrap.

This is a Jeep SSP. Converting it to 4WD will cost more than twice what it sells for at auction minimum .
SSPs use a different AW4 so you must replace the whole transmission, plus transfer case (NP242 preferred here,) which will require you to replace the floor pan for the selector. You also must replace the PCM. Also the IPC. Which requires odometer fun. Which requires a trip to a dealer with a DRB-III (not a WiTech, because WiTech doesn’t work right with this IPC.)
Just keep it 2WD. You’re not missing anything.

From a modding standpoint they are pretty modular. You can add rear disks and better alternators and such from the rest of the Chrysler stable too. For the most part the swaps are plug and play simple.
I’ve had
2 4 door 4 wheel drives with auto and 4.0,
1 2 door 4 wheel drive with auto and 4.0,
and 1 4 door 2wd with 5 speed and 4.0.
The 2wd was the fastest and best handling by far. They are faster than they have any right to be with the 4.0 and lighter front end of the 2wd. T hats where the 5 speed is nice too, so it feels faster. couple mpgs over 4wd too.
Overall I think they just make for a nice American wagon in 2wd guise

Shit. I just spent $862 on my own Jeep. Most of that was labor. *sigh *

C’mon - you know you need another project :) You probably even have the needed parts sitting in your garage...

That is a cool little vehicle. Probably a better to drive than the tractors I used to drive on the airfield:

Check underneath for rust. Any rot underneath is structural rot because everything is structural on an XJ.
4x4 conversion is extremely simple, fwiw.

Good news is, axles check out. Time to get some Por-15 and try that out. Also time to make some rocker prote ction, need to get my welder back.
